The challenge of instituting a solid online MSW program is managing the field work placement for distance learning students. MSW programs are like teaching and nursing degrees, in the sense that much of your learning experience occurs in an “on the job training” atmosphere.  Teachers have a year of student teaching; nurses have hundreds of hours of clinical exposure; and MSW students have nine hundred hours of “field placement, ” meaning working as an intern or junior staffer in a social service agency.

Field placement from a distance can be difficult.  Usually it’s a carefully monitored process involving both the student and the faculty, and most schools have partnerships with local agencies that provide ongoing opportunities for MSW students as they cycle through the program.  Some online schools have developed mechanisms to meet that challenge.  There are two issues to consider when searching for an online Master of Social Work program.  One is whether or not the school is recognized by the state licensing agency where you wish to practice; the other is school accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
